Suffrage

We ushered out August by ushering in a new member, Aaron Sanchez, a student in the Operations Research curriculum here at the Naval Postgraduate school. Below, President Art Testani officially inducts him into the club:

Arnie Buss was TMoD with a theme of "Suffrage" - meaning the right to vote. The word is often associated with "Women's Suffrage," the right of women to vote (which has been in effect in the United States and embarrassingly brief amount of time). Suffrage is not just a right, but a privilege, and one that could be exercised to a much greater extent.

Margaret Stevens gave Opening Remarks

KJ Woods was voted Bets Table Topics Speaker:

Juliette Ferguson's #2 speech Fast Friends. Juliette was voted Most Improved:

Juliette was evaluated by Art Testani:

Tonya Holloway was voted Best Speaker for her #6 speech Be a Teacher, Not Just a Substitute:

Wendy Goody was selected Best Evaluator for her feedback to Tonya:

Humorous/Evaluation Speech Contests (Or Girl's Night Out?)

What a meeting! Congrats, Tonya and Elizabeth! An all-women contest with no male competitors - whassamatta guys - too tough? Eleven members and four guests (two former members, one honorary member, and one about-to-become member) graced the room as Elizabeth Mitchell and Carl Thormeyer served as Humorous and Evaluation Toastmaster respectively. We were really glad to welcome back Brian and Angi Anderson, now of Santa Maria, CA; and Rachelle Onishi who delivered the "test speech" for the Evaluation contest.

Carl being presented with his surprise birthday cake by Rachelle. The fire marshall insisted that we not use the age-appropriate number of candles!

Tonya Holloway got the gold for The Agony and the Ecstasy:

Moyara Ruehsen won second place for The Joys of Childbirth:

Juliette Ferguson's entry That Was Easy:

Rachelle gave the test speech, Join Me:

Elizabeth Mitchell won first place in the evaluation contest:

Lacey Raak came in second in the evaluation contest.

Life Changing Events

First-time TMoD Kate Daniels led a smooth, educational, and fun-filled meeting with a very appropriate theme for her, Major Life Changing Events. On the verge of just such an event herself, Kate wove the theme throughout the meeting and related it to the functionaries and speakers. Fifteen members and one guest were present.

Bruce Lim gave an appropriate and humorous Opening Remarks:

Tonya Holloway led Table Topics, which KJ Woods won:

Prepared speeches included Lacey Raak's #4 speech The End of Days, in which she explored the implications of the Mayan prophesy for December 21, 2012. Lacey was voted both Best Speaker as well as Most Improved. Congratulations Lacey!

Lacey was evaluated by KJ Woods in his first time as evaluator.

Carl Thormeyer gave a #7 speech, the second in a trilogy of speeches about a very timely topic, health care reform and in particular Obama's plan and the various responses to it. His speech was entitled The Health Care Debate: The Issues:

Carl was evaluated by Jim Burlison, who was selected Best Evaluator by general evaluator Natalie Laudier:

Don't forget: Next week is the Humorous and Evaluation contests. You won't want to miss it!

Tour de France!

First time TMoD (Toastmaster of the Day) Craig Gabriellini ran today's meeting like a seasoned veteran. With 17 members and 2 guests, Craig's theme of the Tour de France was timely since that prestigious event was recently completed.

Tonya Holloway won best Table Topics speaker for her reasons why Prince would be the ideal tandem bicycle partner. Kudos to newer members Nick H and Cate A for their responses as well.

KJ Woods led off the speeches with a moving #2 speech Why Disarmament? He was voted Most Improved speaker.

KJ was evaluated by Carl Thormeyer.

Next, Jim Burlison gave three inspiring examples of How to Make the Best of a Bad Situation in his #5 speech, for which Jim was voted Best Speaker.

Jim was evaluated by Natalie Laudier.

Our newset member, Juliette Ferguson gave an inspiring Icebreaker entitled One, One, One that extolled the virtues of being a volunteer:

Juliette was evaluated by Arnie Buss, who was selected as Best Evaluator by GE Katherine Daniels-Kurz.

President Art Testani reported that all club officers attended officers training at MIIS on August 1, 2009. A club officers meeting was held immediately after the August 7 meeting.
